This well-known fiddle tune is often assumed to be of Appalachian origin, but it is actually a western Canadian tune brought to the lower 48 by Montana old-time fiddler Dick Barrett. I first learned it about 40 years ago from a recording of Barrett that was on a Voyager Records compilation of contestants at the Weiser, Idaho fiddle contest in the late 60s. Ed is playing clawhammer style in double C tuning, capoed on the 2nd fret; I am three-finger picking in open D tuning.
