This is one of the oldest, most recognizable, and most universal of all American fiddle tunes, dating back to well before the Civil War. Ed and I recorded this while busking in Harvard Square. Ed is playing clawhammer style in double C tuning, capoed on the 2nd fret, and I amd three-finger picking in open D tuning. Someday we'll have to work out the classic skit that goes with it.

This is a repost of a video I first posted a year ago. This is a new old-time tune by Peter Lippincott, a fiddler and potter from Missouri, and in the original video post I spelled his name wrong, which was just pointed out to me. Now, I believe I got it right! Anyway, the tune has that nice mixolydian flatted seventh that creeps in, especially in the B part. Ed is playing clawhammer style on his OME Columbine, in double C tuning capoed on the 2nd fret. I am three finger picking my Ode Model 42 in open D tuning.

This well-known fiddle tune is often assumed to be of Appalachian origin, but it is actually a western Canadian tune brought to the lower 48 by Montana old-time fiddler Dick Barrett. I first learned it about 40 years ago from a recording of Barrett that was on a Voyager Records compilation of contestants at the Weiser, Idaho fiddle contest in the late 60s.
